In a pinch you can substitute margarine for shortening in a cake recipe. Or butter, if you have that, instead.Substitute for shortening in a homemade cake recipe?
Yes, you can do this, but one must be careful. Butter is only about 80% fat while shortening is 100% fat. Sometimes when recipes call for it, there is a reason (for example, subbing butter for shortening in cookie recipes may result in a thin, flat cookie).

If you sub you might need to add liquid. Some experts say you can't sub 1:1 ratio and some say you can. If you sub, you might want to do it at a 1:1 ratio, then add 1 T of water for each 1/2 of shortening subbed for as called for in the recipe. I wouldn't worry as much about a cake as I would a cookie. HTH.
If your using butter or Margarine, just remember to adjust your salt in the recipe as both contain salt unless you're using salted Butter. I'm not sure what flavor of cake you're making, but Apple Sauce can be subed for shortening or oil also. The cake will be a tad dryer though.
Apple sauce also works. Or yogurt (plain).
